DeepStream’s latest design uses the same design principal as the Audubon, OPUS, and Oahu recyclers and trash bins but in a round form.  Various graphics can be affixed to and  inner graphics shell to give your bins a custom look at an affordable price.   They can be easily updated with new graphics at any time for a very low cost and the stainless steel frame is built to last virtually forever.  All components can  be easily recycled.

Recycled Plastic Lumber: Helping the world’s Rain Forests and slowing Climate Change.

In 2009, DeepStream started offering Recycled Plastic Lumber (RPL) as an alternative to tropical hardwoods. While more and more of our customers have been choosing RPL over the past eight years, in 2017, RPL is being specified more often than real wood.

RPL is a win for the environment and for our customers, as RPL reduces maintenance costs while enhancing their properties and brands through the timeless beauty and environmental statement that DeepStream RPL planters and bins make.

Like many successful companies, DeepStream was created in a response to a need. While building a condominium project and reviewing the “universe” of garden planers, we found that what we wanted was not available elsewhere. Wood planters were all carpenter-built with wood-on-wood construction, and as I’ve detailed in my planter blog link, http://planterblog.com/blog/?p=1, and they just don’t last. The valuable wood harvested from the world’s rapidly diminishing rain forests is wasted, as the planters tear themselves apart and are thrown away in a few years (typically 3-4 years here in Miami).

If your project absolutely must use tropical hardwood, then specify our Mariner planter system as it is engineered with the principles of Sustainable Design to use, or even reuse, hardwood in a design that honors the wood, allowing construction that extends wood life by decades.

Harvesting tropical hardwood destroys important habitats around the world, even if “sustainably harvested,” as hardwood trees take 50 years or more to reach maturity. Like offsetting our carbon foot print by buying carbon credits, another way to reduce this impact is to replant far more trees than we use, and we do so through Trees for the Future. To date, using proceeds from the sale of our products, DeepStream has planted more than 333,000 trees in our customers’ honor, reflecting DeepStream’s commitment to the environment we are leaving for future generations.

Rugged Articulated Levelers Add Functionality

DeepStream Designs stocks two types of levelers for the bottom of products made with  Audubon legs, like the bin pictured here.  Both levelers have a maximum adjustment range of approximately 1-3/4 inches and rugged 12mm (1/2″) thick stainless steel stems with non-marking plastic footpads.rigid and articulated leveler

The pad of Rigid Leveler, at left and below, fits completely under the leg, raising the bin by 5/8”, while the Articulated Leveler, at right, has a wider foot pad that sticks out just a bit and raises the bin by 1-1/8”.  Both Levelers can be retrofitted in the field by affixing a nut inside the void designed into the bottom of the DeepStream Designs Trademark Audubon marine anodized aircraft aluminum leg.

ridgid levelerThe Rigid Leveler, above, is a lighter weight leveler with a smaller ridged floor pad for situations where the floor is generally flat but there may be different levels caused by bricks or tile that are not completely level.

The Articulated Leveler, above, has a thicker and wider articulated pad that will rotate off level for situations where the bin is placed on a slope and you need to level it up, not just stabilize the leg for a lower tile or brick.

Which one do you need? If you’re placing a bin in a situation like the one shown below built with 100% recycled plastic lumber, where the brick sidewalk slopes sharply away from the building, you need the articulated leveler as a shown retrofitted on the right.

Here are two 3Form materials, Seagrass and Harvest with an Ivory backer , we made into 19 outdoor recycling bins.  These bins will be going into a parking garage in Houston and are complete with passivated SS 16 Gauge Stainless Steel lids.   At our clients request they have been fitted with Smokers Stations by us at a cost lower than they could buy the Smokers Stations by themselves.

Packaging:  The final step in Sustainable Design and Manufacturing for DeepStream Designs:

Sustainable Design coupled with manufacturing products that stand the test of time in an environmentally responsible and sustainable fashion, allows DeepStream’s Customers to eliminate the “throw away” waste factor found in many of today’s products.

However, that is just the start of DeepStream’s Environmental Stewardship.

It is not enough that our products will last for generations and help slow the destruction of the rainforest.  Or that our products are 100% recyclable when their end of service finally comes. Or that we replant thousands of trees through “Trees for the Future” every year in our customers’ honor, a program which also offers locals alternative forestry jobs in tree nurseries and reforestation.

DeepStream also offers an alternative line of plantation-grown timber: Lyptus.   Even more potential rainforest destruction is diverted by offering planking for our recycling bins and garden planters made from recycled plastic.

DeepStream also ensures that it is meeting our environmental stewardship commitments with our packaging.

All of our cardboard used in shipping is 100% recycled content and purchased through Pratt Industries, www.prattindustries.com.   Similarly, we build our pallets in house to ensure that the 2x4s we use are harvested and certified through either the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, www.sfiprogram.org , or the Forest Stewardship Council, www.fsc.org, or both.   These standards provide third-party verification that the forest management and on-the-ground activities used by the lumber producers are environmentally responsible and sustainable.

Adaptation: Trash & Recycling Bin Covers

The modular nature of our products creates an adaptability factor that we consider a hallmark of our sustainable design philosophy.  Why replace when you can adapt?

An example is this cover we created for a school in California committed to recycling but also home to feisty squirrels. The “weather-proof critter cover” also works well to keep out heavy rains.  If your bin is outside and you have raccoons, you might want to order your cover and lid with a low-profile slot and hasp for a lock.   Both are an easy retrofit in the field.

The hinged design is simple and robust, just like our bins.  The flap is constructed from 18-gauge stainless steel whereas the lid is 16-gauge. A robust but low profile stainless steel piano hinge attaches with flush fasteners.

The handle is a standard distance between holes so it can be replaced or customized wherever kitchen hardware is sold. If your application is near salt water or completely out in the rain, the cover, like the lid, can be ordered with the stainless steel passivated to reduce maintenance.

The only compromise we have found in the design is that simple care needs to be taken when opening the lid to replace the bags that line the inner bins. However, it is an intuitive maneuver to open the lid with one hand while holding and gently lowering the cover with the other hand.
