Adaptation, a key component of Sustainable Design embraced by Deepstream is the ability of our products to adapt. Adaptive Design allows for the replacement, or reworking, of components to preserve the value and materials of an earlier design.
The adaptive cover below was created for a school in California. the school was committed to recycling but also home to feisty squirrels that rummaged their bins. The result, a “weatherproof ” critter cover.
If your top loading Audubon modern DeepStream recycling receptacle or trash bin is outside and you have raccoons, you might want to adapt your cover and lid with a low-profile slot and hasp for a lock. This also works if your neighbors are using your bin.
DeepStream builds every product as if application is in a coastal environment near salt water or out in the rain. This adaptive flap is constructed from 18-gauge 316 stainless steel whereas the lid is 16-gauge 316 stainless steel.
The hinged design is simple and robust, just like our bins. the low profile stainless steel piano hinge attaches to the lid with flush fasteners. A template makes it easy to adapt your existing lid with a drill and a screwdriver.
The 18-8 stainless steel handle has a standard distance between mounting holes. Should it be damaged it can be replaced at cost, as can any individual piece, through DeepStream’s Core Replacement Program. You may also customized your handles when ordering or buy a substitute wherever kitchen hardware is sold.
The only compromise we have found in this design adaptation is that simple care needs to be taken when opening the lid to replace the bags that line the inner bins. However, it is an intuitive maneuver to open the lid with one hand while holding and gently lowering the cover with the other hand.
Of course the cover also works well to keep out heavy rains and snow.

These wood privacy screen walls use separated wood planks held securely within DeepStream’s trademark marine-anodized structural leg extrusions. Space between the planks blocks the view, allows for cooling air flow, and reduces the force of high winds on the planter.
DeepStream’s large modular wood planters do more than hold the wood privacy screen. The wood planter boxes equipped with waterproof plastic liners provide the perfect condition for landscaping with bushes, flowers, or even trees.
Each modular planter section’s aluminum frame supports a rugged waterproof plastic liner to contain the planting medium. DeepStream’s proprietary liners have a tapered shaped for easy replanting. They are designed with an advanced drainage system that can be directed if necessary using common threaded fittings.
The liner within a wood planter box design leaves space to hide drip irrigation systems and directed drainage if required. The resulting airspace between the wood planter box and the plastic liner prevents solar gain from overheating the root ball.
Solar gain is a real problem on terraces, balconies, and roof decks with south- and west-facing exposures. The result of this design is that the roots remain at ambient air temperature.
Solar gain will heat any single-wall planter or pot to over 145 degrees on an 85-degree day. As a result, the root ball on the sunny side overheats, stressing the plants no matter how much water they receive.

Recycled Plastic Lumber (RPL) is a perfect weather and sun proof material to use with DeepStream’s marine anodized aluminum extrusion. Custom RPL fixtures may be pressure cleaned for sanitation and maintenance as there is no paint or powder coating to fail. The manufacturer of the recycled plastic lumber provides a 50 year warranty.
16-gauge 316 stainless steel tops and stainless fittings ensure that these custom fixtures will stand up to the elements. All fittings are attached using a proprietary dielectric paste on all the fasteners. This paste prevents the stainless fasteners from seizing in the aluminum so that if any part of a custom fixture is damaged it may be replaced.
Here are two very different valet stands that use the same materials and components: stainless steel, recycled plastic lumber, and marine anodized aluminum extrusions.
Components common to these custom fixtures include 316 stainless steel top and fittings, recycled plastic lumber, marine anodized aircraft aluminum, adjustable leveling feet or casters.

HDPE, high density polyethylene, think cutting board , like the polypropylene used in recycled plastic lumber is waterproof but not structural. DeepStream engineered special construction techniques to ensure these materials serve as expected over decades of institutional use.

Rugged stainless steel casters add functionality to custom fixtures.
While all of DeepSteams accessories add functionality to custom fixtures, Casters are the most often requested accessory by customers. Casters can be attached to a recessed frame to hide them or they can be added to the corners of the trademark marine anodized aluminum legs directly.
There are rugged accessory casters for almost every product. Stainless steel casters for heavy wooden food service carts, garden planters, or a weatherproof point-of-sale terminal cabinet. Medium duty dual wheel accessory casters work extremely well indoors on both carpet and hard floors.
The second most requested accessory to add functionality are leveling feet.
DeepStream Designs stocks two types of levelers for the bottom of products made with Audubon legs, like the bin pictured below. Both levelers have a maximum adjustment range of approximately 1-3/4 inches and rugged 12mm (1/2″) thick stainless steel stems with non-marking plastic footpads.
The pad of Rigid Leveler fits completely under a leg, raising the bin by 5/8” at a minimum. The Articulated Leveler, at right, has a wider foot pad that sticks out just a bit and raises the bin by 1-1/8” at its lowest setting. Both Levelers can be retrofitted in the field by affixing a special nut inside the void designed into the bottom of the DeepStream Designs trademark marine anodized aircraft aluminum leg.
The Rigid Leveler, above,is a lighter weight leveler with a smaller ridged floor pad for situations where the floor is generally flat but there may be different levels caused by bricks or tile that are not completely level.
The Articulated Leveler, above, has a thicker and wider articulated pad that will rotate off level for situations where the bin is placed on a slope and you need to level it up, not just stabilize the leg for a lower tile or brick.
Which one do you need? If you’re placing a trash or recycling receptacle in a situation like the one shown below built with 100% recycled plastic lumber, where the brick sidewalk slopes sharply away from the building, you need the articulated leveler as a shown retrofitted on the right.

Adaptive design may be required in advance as a design feature on projects where ongoing work will require an installation to move. As other features are added to a project DeepStream can work with your initial plans to reconfigure existing installations. This feature has many benefits for seasonal installation of planters for a sidewalk café or a restaurant patio.
There is never a design fee and reconfiguring may not even require new parts. If new parts are required it’s a simple job for Deepstream to add a few additional joining planks and extrusion.
The rooftop dog park, photo below, is an example where the building developer may move an entire complex structure. The aluminum frame of the Deepstream modular wood planters that hold the wood and glass screen wall and gates can easily be disassembled and reconfigured.
If, for any reason, fixtures ordered months earlier in a project don’t fit when finally installed the value of adaptive design is readily apparent. A miscalculation between initial measurements and “as-built” dimension can be corrected easily in a cost effective manner literally overnight.
The 3 photos below show an example where DeepStream’s modular planter, created with adaptive design, allowed us to accommodate an unrecorded change in dimensions. At very little cost in time, dollars, or materials we were able to supply new planks for the middle section of the multi-section planter.
Fiberglass, metal, or concrete planters would have not been able to accommodate this type of error common on large projects.
While the new wood planks will take a week or so to fade to the match color for existing planks the same adaptive design feature allows for replacement of parts or further adaptation for the life of the planter.
